Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons Is A Hoard Of Dragon Lore: Dungeon Masters and fans of dragons are thrilled! Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons has been open and is now available for exploration!

The book is packed with everything you could possibly want in an entire book devoted to dragons. With stat blocks, lore as well as player options, and suggestions for DMs to incorporate dragons in your campaigns Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons strive to become the definitive source for all things dragon-related within D&D 5e.

I had fun going through this book and am thrilled to present my Tabletop Joab review of Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons!

What is Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons?

The Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons is a supplement to D&D 5e that focuses on dragons and everything else connected to them.

There’s a TON of information in this book! (We’ll look at what’s included in it in one second!)

Like other books written for 5e were “written through” well-known characters of D&D’s history (like the Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes), this book is written from the point of view of the powerful archmage Fizban The Fabulous.

In addition to the fantastic draconic items, Fizban has included humorous and informative notes and observations throughout the book.

With the majority of 5e’s recent releases focussed on exciting and new settings for the campaign, it’s nice to see this one take an eminent return to the traditional fantasy that D&D represents.

Although Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons functions as an excellent resource for everything dragon-related There are enough details in the book to build a whole campaign around!

A DM who has read the Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons and applies it to their game will be capable of capturing the thrill (and fear) when confronting the dragon.

This book could still be appealing to some players despite offering many player choices. There’s a lot of information within the Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons, players who wish to learn more about dragons and the lore they carry should not look any further.

The content in Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons works best for those who are creating their own tale. Except for those Tyranny of Dragons adventures, you’ll have a hard to fitting the content into other adventure-related modules.

What is in Fizban Treasury of Dragons?

What is it that is contained inside Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons, you may ask?

The book contains six chapters. There’s also some interesting lore that is included in the preface as well as a number of sidebars. Certain sections (like those on Character Options) are shorter, However, most chapters are large!

Let’s look at what to anticipate in each of the sections!

Character Options

Chapter One of Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons includes several dragon-themed options available to players.

The first is that there are three sub-races available for Dragonborn characters to select from.

Particularly, players are able to select if their Dragonborn comes from Chromatic, Metallic, or Gem Dragon bloodline. Each of these options gives additional abilities for the character based on the specific ancestry that was selected.

Monks and Rangers are excited about the new subclass choices included within Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons!

For monks for the monk, the Way of the Ascendant Dragon blends the power of dragons and the agility and discipline associated with martial arts. The students from this Monastic Tradition are able to increase their own combat capabilities as they fly on dragon wings that spectral and harness their power to strengthen their friends.

Rangers On the other hand are granted their Drakewarden subclass. They have formed an alliance with a dragon spirit that grows and fight together. Your animal friend is a formidable partner in battle and battle, but eventually, you’ll be able to utilize it as an air-borne mount!

I’m sure there were a few missing opportunities to have more dragon-related subclasses. It is interesting to get more details on the possibility of dragons being Warlock patrons, as well as an extra dose of love for the Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer.

Finally, the character’s Options part of Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons includes dragon-themed actions and suggestions on ways to connect characters to a dragon theme, regardless of their level.

Draconic Magic

in Chapter 2, Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons, we look at the role played by Draconic magic.

In the beginning, spellcasters have seven additional spells to think about! Naturally, they are draconic spells both in the name and in effect!

From there, we receive 13 brand new Magic Items that you can incorporate into any adventure you plan to go on. A lot of the items listed are very powerful and include items such as those from Dragonlance or The Flail of Tiamat.

What makes this section shine is providing suggestions on what an item might gain power as the result of being part of the hoard of a dragon. These items can not only be more powerful, however, but they may also be able to develop unique magic characteristics.

In the final section, the Draconic gifts section in this chapter will explain the various types of powers, abilities, and physical changes that can be gained from the slaying of the dragon. If you’re running a Dragon-themed campaign, this level of dragon power could be an extraordinary reward for your party participants!

Using Dragons in Your Games

For Dungeon Masters Chapter 3 is the place where you will find the actual “meat” of Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons.

In this chapter, Fizban explores the best ways to play the role of the dragon and gives information on dragons’ lives. The lives of dragons as well as religions, organizations, and much more are all right here!

This is the main distinction between simply incorporating dragons in your campaign and having them truly be an element of your game’s universe.

Also, there’s information about dragons’ followers, as well as the kinds of relationships dragons might be able to establish with their followers.

The role of dragons in your tale is discussed within this section.

Is there a specific dragon that is one who plots his time, and adjusts their surroundings as pieces on a board of chess?

But do they appear to be monsters that terrorize those who are within their sphere of influence?

What if neither is true and that the dragon’s power is greater an element of nature than anything else?

There’s tons of excellent information from the Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons, but this is the one that I believe provides the greatest worth to DMs. In this alone, you’ll have plenty of information that you can utilize to plan an entire dragon adventure for your characters!

Dragon Lairs and Hoards

The famous writer, Jane Austen, once wrote that “it is a truth universally acknowledged, that a dragon in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of more treasure.”

Okay, it’s possible that’s not what she was saying however that doesn’t mean it is less accurate!

Dragons treasure their possessions and areas defined by their huge hoards as other things!

That’s why that Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons is going to provide more details about dragon’s lairs as well as the wealth of treasures hidden in them!

The fourth chapter of the book begins off by looking at the process of creating dragon lairs.

This not only makes for an exciting game for the players, but it also can affect the entire area surrounding the lair, as well as provide the dragon with special “lair actions” that it can utilize.

This chapter will discuss the amazing effects that hordes be able to have on treasures within their midst.

There are guides on the kinds of treasures one could discover in the dragon’s hoard and how to make your own!

Draconomicon

Different dragons are not alike! The idea that the Blue Dragon is the same as Silver Dragon is to assume that a Blue Dragon is the same as a Silver Dragon is to march into death!

This is the place Chapter 5 comes in: the Draconomicon.

This chapter provides complete breakdowns of 20 different kinds of dragons available.

For each dragon type you’ll receive:

  • The Dragon’s Guide to Creating its persona and ideals
  • Hooks for adventure to bring the dragon into your campaign
  • Maps and features from the full lair
  • Ideas to bring the dragon into the world of yours (based upon their age)
  • Ideas for treasures are particularly loved by this kind of dragon.
  • Sidebars that feature famous dragons that are of this kind.

Remember when I talked pretty much about Chapter 3? The Draconomicon found in the Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons is an extremely close second in importance!

A dragon encounter should be an unforgettable experience. These two chapters go hand in hand to make sure you get it the way you want it!

Bestiary

Then, and certainly not the last Chapter 6 will be the dragon’s bestiary that you’ve been anticipating! With 65 pages, it makes up close to a third of the whole book.

While there’s certainly a large number of entries in this book I’m really impressed by how fascinating each one of the entries is. I was worried at first about it being a kind of “one-note” with few other entries, but this compilation is well-crafted and inspiring!

Although there are way too many entries to read through everyone or even all of them must present a few of my own standout tops!

To my players’ upcoming fear I am in love with this Elder Brain Dragon. Combining the terror of dragons fighting and Mind Flayers. This is a most terrifying nightmare scenario. The breath attack of the dragon infects everyone it strikes with Mind Flayer Tadpoles, regardless of whether they succeed in making the rescue!

I’m almost certain to write an article about Dragons of the Elder Brain Dragon some time in the very near the near

Similar to as well the Hoard Mimic. While adventurers are probably savvy to the tricks used by others, the old imitations are disguised as dragon hoards. One might believe they’ve landed the ultimate payday but then be swallowed by what they thought was a treasure to be taken!

On the more innocent aspect, I instantly was in love with Moonstone Dragons. They have a dreamy Fey feel to them that makes me smile. I’m excited to introduce one of them to my group!

There are stat blocks for certain aspects which are the two Bahamut and Tiamat for those who want to include some god-like characters in your campaign!

Although there are MANY wonderful additions to this bestiary book I have a few personal favorite selections.

FINAL VERDICT: IS FIZBAN’S TREASURY OF DRAGONS WORTH BUYING?

With such a wealth of information and a laser-focused approach to demonstrating the advantages dragons offer within D&D 5e, I’m awestruck by Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons.

For Dungeon Masters I’d say it is absolutely worthy of a place on your shelves. This is particularly true when you’re playing games in the “classic fantasy” style (as opposed to, say, a horror-themed campaign like Ravenloft as an example.)

Chapters 3, 5, and 6, in particular, fascinated me. They offer enough information and examples to quickly create your own world, based on the dragons that live in the. If there’s no other reason beyond that I’d suggest the Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons.

As I stated at the start of this piece This is an unwise purchase for players. The vast majority of the book is intended to be used by Dungeon Masters, after all.

If you’re not really looking to get to know everything concerning dragons, much to gain from this for the player. The options for characters are excellent however, you’ll be purchasing a few pages if it’s all you want to know about. In this scenario, you’ll need to borrow a copy of your DM.

For Dungeon Masters, lore hounds, and worldbuilders Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons is a reliable source of delicious and useful information!

Conclusions – Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons

I love the fact that Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons takes such an in-depth look into everything Dragons.

This makes me believe that we’ll see more novels in the near future which follow a similar path to other types of creatures.

It’s been interesting to talk with other people who have read this book, it seems to be a popular feeling! It would be wonderful to read books that cover everything you might have ever wanted to know about a specific species of a creature like Giants, Undead, or Devils!

We’ve seen some truly intriguing lore from books like Volo’s Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes, but opening the vault in a fashion similar to Fizban’s Treasury makes for an amazing and well-focused source!
