James Young, a Taiwanese immigrant, arrived in the U.S. in 1988. He opened his first Asian restaurant in 1975. Soon, he was expanding his operations across Texas.
Young decided that his two Amarillo locations weren’t profitable and partnered with Abuelo founders Dirk Rambo, Chuck Anderson, to convert one of them to Mexican food.
In 1989, the first Abuelo’s Restaurant opened in Amarillo (Texas). They wanted to serve authentic Mexican food in a relaxed atmosphere, surrounded by Mexican art and architecture.
There are currently 38 Abuelo locations. Luis Sanchez, Chef of Abuelo’s, has helped to develop the menu. He shares his family recipes with us and makes sure that every meal is freshly prepared.
