History of Regal Theatres

movies theaters

Regal cinemas as we know them as of today were first introduced in 1989. The Regal Cinemas of today no longer Regal stand as a stand-alone entity however, it’s now joined with two other chains: Edwards Theaters and United Artists Theaters. All three brands of cinema are operated and owned by one parent company called Regal Entertainment Group.

Edwards Theaters was founded in 1930 by William James Edwards Jr. It was a family-owned business that was primarily operated by the Edwards family in California. After having achieved huge popularity among movie lovers, the Edwards Theaters were able to hold, for a short period of time, premier-time movie premieres for some of the most recent Hollywood blockbusters.

Unfortunately, Edwards passed away in 1997 and became succeeded by their son William James Edwards III. William James Edwards III. At the time there were more than 90 Edwards cinemas across the country and boasting more than 500 screens. His successor quickly announced an enormous expansion plan, with the intention to increase its size. business.

But, it failed yet realized. This rapid expansion caused the company to abrupt bankruptcy in 2000.

United Artists Theaters is closely connected to that of the United Artists film production company of which Charlie Chaplin himself was a part. The chain of theaters was established in 1924 and was run by Joseph Schenck.

At first, it was as a part initially part of UA Studios, the company was able to separate itself and eventually become its own entity. In the 1970s, it was a component of the United Artists Communications group.

The company was sold time and again in the latter part of the 70s. TCI as well as Tele-Communications Inc. were to first to acquire the company later, followed by Merrill Lynch Capital Partners Inc. along with a number of United Artists management members who took over the company in 1992.

Similar to Edwards Theaters, United Artists Theaters was in the process of going bankrupt at the beginning of 2000…

Regal Cinemas, as we previously mentioned, was founded in 1989 after in which Mike Campbell held the reigns as the initial CEO. At the time, Regal focused on a more refined appearance (hence”Regal”) and a more elegant style (hence “Regal”) in addition, each location also had an elegant cafe, referred to for its Cafe Del Moro.

In the last decade of the 1990s, Regal Cinemas began to expand, buying rival and smaller chain cinemas around the US and developing the first modern multiplexes. But, Regal would soon suffer a similar fate as other chains of cinemas in the past. The reason was overextending and the huge debts incurred for the acquisitions.

There was a happy angel waiting. The angel’s name is Phillip Anschutz. Phillip purchased each of the three cinemas, in the end, becoming the major owner following the filing of bankruptcy. In the year 2002, Phillip declared his intention to merge all three chains and operated under one parent company – Regal Entertainment Group – which continues to be to this day.

Mike Campbell of Regal Cinemas was appointed the director of the cinema and was also co-CEO, along alongside Kurt Hall from United Artists who was assigned the responsibility of running the newly formed division, Regal Cinemedia.

Regal Entertainment Group has gone into the acquisition of additional theater chains in the United States. This includes acquiring Consolidated Theatre’s 28 theaters with a value of $110 million in addition to the Hollywood Theatre’s 46 theaters from 2013. in exchange for $191 million.

Presently, the Regal Entertainment Group is one of the biggest cinema chains around the globe that operates more than 7000 screens in over 500 locations. The company’s headquarters is currently within Halls Crosswords, Tennesee.

Regal Cinemas consistently take first place in being one of the first to adopt the most modern cinema audio and video technology. Before anyone even heard about the 4K resolutions, Regal had already signed an agreement together with Sony to install every one of its theaters with 4K digital projectors for the next five years beginning in 2009.

Five years have passed, and their agreement has proven to be a hit. The majority of Regal Cinema locations run 4k resolution digital projectors, which are the top of the line in the industry.

It’s certainly no longer the 1900s and no cinema can be complete without sound systems. That’s the reason why you’ll find that a lot of their cinemas come by an audio system called the Dolby ATMOS technology. What makes this system unique? Simply because Dolby ATMOS lets the film fill the cinema with 360-degrees of sound and transport you to an experience that is completely immersive.

We’re certain you’re not new to IMAX and, if you are, we’ll try to convince you to change your routine. We looked at some reviews. Here are some of the most recent ones:

This is among the most stunning movie theaters I’ve been to and I’ve been to several theaters. It is huge in both the structure and the theaters. It’s elegant and could be used for a variety of social gatherings. If I visit this region in L. A. again I’ll definitely watch another film here. Josh E. Josh E.

Living in DTLA for the past 11 years, it’s amazing to finally have a top-quality theater in walking, biking, or a short bus ride. The auditoriums are excellent and the seating, picture and sound quality are high-end and the service is consistently top-quality. The $8 Tuesdays are my favorite I like to watch every week a film. Excellent rewards program too. Thank you, Regal, you’ve knocked it out of the out of the park! – Bryan Middleton
